Why Handmade Cards Matter

The Lasting Impact of Sending a Handmade Card

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to send a quick text, type a message on social media, or tap an emoji to let someone know we’re thinking of them. Those things certainly have their place, but there’s something incredibly special about opening the mailbox and finding a handmade card tucked inside.

A handmade card says, “I took time for you.”

It tells someone they were worth slowing down for. Every stamp, every layer of paper, every ribbon, embellishment, and handwritten note represents a gift of time—one of the most meaningful gifts we can give.

I often tell my stampers that we don’t make cards because we have to. We make them because someone needs them.

Maybe it’s a birthday.

Maybe it’s a sympathy card that arrives on the hardest day.

Maybe it’s a thank-you for an act of kindness that shouldn’t go unnoticed.

Maybe it’s simply a note that says, “I’m thinking about you.”

Sometimes we never know how much that little envelope will mean to the person who receives it.

Handmade Cards Create Connections

One of my favorite things about cardmaking isn’t actually the stamping.

It’s the connection.

Every card has a destination. It carries encouragement, celebration, comfort, gratitude, or love from one person to another. Long after the flowers have faded or the gift has been forgotten, a heartfelt card often gets tucked into a drawer, displayed on a mantel, or saved inside a memory box.

That’s something pretty amazing.

A simple piece of cardstock can become a treasured keepsake.

Creativity Is Good for the Soul

Creating cards is also a gift we give ourselves.

Life can be busy and sometimes overwhelming. Sitting down with beautiful papers, colorful ink, and a favorite stamp set gives us permission to slow down, be creative, and simply enjoy the process.

There isn’t a “perfect” card.

There is only your card.

The one made with your hands, your creativity, and your heart.

Every card teaches us something new, and every finished project reminds us that creating doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful.

Small Acts Make a Big Difference

I truly believe the world could use more kindness.

A handmade card may seem like a small gesture, but small acts of kindness often leave the biggest impression. One thoughtful card can brighten someone’s day, encourage a friend who’s struggling, celebrate a milestone, or remind someone they aren’t alone.

You never know what someone is carrying when they open their mailbox.

Your card might be exactly what they needed.

Why I Keep Stamping

People sometimes ask me why I’ve spent so many years teaching others to make cards.

The answer is simple.

Because handmade cards matter.

I’ve watched complete beginners discover a creative hobby they never knew they would love. I’ve seen friendships grow around a craft table. I’ve watched stampers create cards for weddings, new babies, graduations, anniversaries, holidays, and difficult goodbyes.

Every one of those cards represents love in a tangible form.

That’s why I continue to share weekly card classes, creative inspiration, and simple projects that anyone can recreate. My hope is that every person who stamps with me gains more than a stack of finished cards. I hope they gain confidence, creativity, and the joy that comes from sharing something handmade with the people they care about.

One Card Can Change Someone’s Day

If you’ve ever wondered whether your handmade cards really make a difference, let me encourage you today.

Keep stamping.

Keep creating.

Keep sending those cards.

Someone out there is waiting to feel remembered, celebrated, encouraged, or loved—and your handmade card might be exactly what reaches them at the right moment.

After all, we aren’t just making cards.

We’re making connections, sharing kindness, and leaving little pieces of our hearts wherever our envelopes land.

And that is why handmade cards matter.

“Stay inspired, create something beautiful, and share the love.”

Using Ordinary Objects For Cardmaking

My Pampered Pets cards are in the bag…literally. Have you considered ordinary objects for cardmaking? Sure, there are beautiful designer series papers for sale! But, what about something you can use that is “free”?

Now, you might argue that some of the things I suggest, like this cute bag, are not really free. You probably paid for the item inside the packaging. Yet, when you recycle or toss out these ordinary objects, it becomes a “freebie” for cardmaking.

A visit to the vet provided this cute bag for cardmaking.

Stylish Bags

I certainly spent plenty of money at my local veterinarians on my Pampered Pets to get this fabulous bag! But the pattern on it brought out the crafter in me. Too sweet to throw out, I just knew I needed to make some pet cards with it.

First, I cut the bag along one of the long seems and across the bottom. By making the bag “flat”, I could really see what I would have to work with. Now that it looked like regular paper, I could envision using it like regular paper.

Coordinating Colors

In order to have any project flow, the colors have to go together. After thinking about the fun colors used on my paper bag, I pulled out a few samples of Stampin’ Up! cardstock to see what would match.

The green was an easy decision: Granny Apple for this bright spring like color. I tried a couple versions of pink before settling on the boldness of Magenta Madness. These two over-the-top colors matched almost identically to my bag colors.

Coordinating Stamp Set

In searching for stamps and dies to use for my pet cards, pulling out the Pampered Pets Stamp Set and Pets Dies was an easy decision. This cute stamp set covers both dogs and cats. Having coordinating dies is a bonus too!

Because I did not want to do any coloring, I kept my pets simple. First, I used Memento Black Ink and stamped the cat on Smoky Slate Cardstock. Next, I used the same ink and stamped the dog on Soft Suede.

Design Elements

My die cut Pampered Pets needed a background behind them. I pulled out my Layering Ovals Dies (retired) and found just the right size for the slightly bigger dog and slightly smaller cat.

After using my Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine for a white oval to showcase each pet, I chose a larger scalloped die to cut out a bright pop of coordinating color.

Next up, my Pampered Pets needed a little love. I punched some small hearts using Magenta Madness Cardstock and a (retired) small heart punch. After that, I added some Magenta Madness Ink with a small sponge to deepen the color on my hearts.

Simple Sentiments

For the sentiments on each card, I chose designs from the Pampered Pets Stamp Set. I stamped each sentiment on a scrap of white cardstock using Memento Black Ink. One of my favorite ways to change the shape of the rectangle sentiment is to add a slanted edge on one side. All you need to do this is a pair of scissors, like my Paper Snips.

Putting It All Together

Once I had everything I wanted for my Pampered Pets cards, it was time to assemble. I chose Granny Apple Green for my dog and Magenta Madness for my cat. But, in reality, either color would have worked for both.

When I cut paper from my bag, I looked for designs on it that would go best for the dog, and also the cat. I used my paper bag pieces exactly how I would use designer series paper. I layered each along the top of my card front and added coordinating paper from the Brights Collection along the bottom.

Adding base layers to the card front.

Instead of ribbon, I chose to cover the seam of my paper with another strip of cardstock. I find this method a great way to use up scraps of paper too.

Using cardstock scraps instead of ribbon.

From the bones of my card base, to the first layers, I am loving the look. Next, I added on the oval die cuts with their Pampered Pets, using dimensionals to add lift. My heartfelt sentiments and my hearts were the last things I placed on my cards.

And More!

Of course, I couldn’t stop with just a couple of cards using my “free” bag. I also played with the Heart Punch Pack, and the Playful Alphabet Dies to create more cute cards. Check these pet cards out:

Perfect Packaging

It helps to have a great supply of items that you can coordinate and craft with. As you can see in my Pampered Pets cards above, I used my bag as inspiration and searched my stash for the perfect go-withs. If you haven’t discovered my online store, look for something you need to complete your next project.

Being crafty and creative with ordinary objects is so much fun. Look around and find the perfect patterns surrounding you…a mail flyer, a tissue box, a recipe card. The only limits are your imagination. What will discover and what will you create?

Sweet Little Boxes

Completed Sweet Little Box decorated in Sweet Talk Designer Series Paper and adorned with a tag and stamped heart from the Sweet Conversations Bundle.

Sweet Little Boxes

Have you seen the Sweet Little Boxes from the Sweet Talk Suite? They remind me of the boxes that Conversation Candy Hearts came in. But the best part is, you get to decorate them and fill them with whatever you like that fits!

With the Sweet Little Boxes, you can add food, since they are food safe. They are small in stature, measuring 3-1/2 x 2-1/2 x 5/8″. I think they would be perfect for chocolate coated candies or fruit flavored yums, but you get to decide for yourself.

Pre-Scored, Fold and Adhere

Sweet Little Boxes, item #157628

One of the things I like best about these adorable boxes is that they come pre-scored. To start, give each of the fold lines a good bend. Work with your box to see what it will look like once it is assembled. This is a lot like creating a pizza box, if you have ever seen that done!

Just make sure that before you remove the paper that exposes the included sticky tape, you have the box ready and in position. The bottom end flap tabs should be folded in. I find it easier to work with one side of tape at a time.

Sweet Talk Designer Series Paper

Sweet Talk Designer Series Paper

Ready to add some fun to your assembled Sweet Little Box? You can see that the Sweet Talk Designer Series Paper is perfect for this job. In fact, it is difficult to pick a pattern!

I cut my paper with my Paper Trimmer to 2-3/8 x 3-3/8″. If you cut 2 papers this size, you can decorate both the front and the back of the box. This is easier than trying to wrap the paper completely around the box, and just as effective without the hassle of all those corners to work around.

I (Heart) Tags

Tag and heart die from the Sweet Hearts Dies

Next, you will want to make a tag to add to your Sweet Little Box for easier gifting. You will find the perfect tag die in the Sweet Hearts Dies. I cut mine in my Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine using White Cardstock. Do you see the tiny hole at the top of the tag? This will come in handy later.

And don’t forget to decorate your tag too! The Sweet Conversations Stamp Set has images of hearts with those candy sayings. I used the largest heart stamp, added Real Red Ink and stamped on Blushing Bride Cardstock. Lastly, I die cut my heart using the Sweet Hearts Dies.

Real Red Ribbon

Now it is time to add the finishing touches to our Sweet Little Box. First, I wrapped about 20″ of Real Red Faux Linen Ribbon around my box and tied it in a bow. If you prefer to secure your ribbon, I suggest adding a couple of Mini Glue Dots beneath the ribbon on the front and back before you make your bow.

After I adhered my die cut heart to my tag, I added a small piece of Bakers Twine thru the small hole at the top of the tag. Then, I tied the twine around my red ribbon and trimmed the twine ends.
